Disney Posters: Trademark Advertising Past and Present

Sometimes a company will try a method of advertising and meet with success, so why change something that works? They decide to continue on with this popular method of communicating their product to consumers. This has been true for the Disney company and their Disney posters. A method of advertising that began decades ago, despite modern methods of communication and advertising, the movie poster concept has remained a true and consistent marketer for the company. Other companies have taken on the movie poster strategy as a way to market their upcoming shows and met with positive results also. Movie posters continue to be a trend despite the many types of advertising media in existence today.

The Disney poster is legendary, beginning in the early years of Disney as a marketing concept for the beginnings of their movie productions. This included drawn advertisements for such creations as Steamboat Willie in the 1920s for one of Disney's first productions. Most recent Disney movie posters have been a bit more sensational than these simple beginnings, as instead of being hand-drawn and in black and white most are now computerized and brightly colored. The Disney poster has become an icon and not only relays messages about movies but are also collectible. Some movie posters are worth hanging on a wall while others are worth thousands of dollars and hang in memorabilia collections or museums.

During the production of the movie The Lion King, there were a number of movie posters produced. Some of the print layouts were mass-produced and were everywhere, from the supermarket to print in magazines of all genres. Of the types of The Lion King posters that were produced, the most common ones for the original movie featured an apparition lion's head looking down on either a blue or orange background. A vintage Lion King poster from the 1994 movie can be found on the internet and is one of the more affordable options if one is beginning to collect movie posters. One of these in decent shape can be found in the price range of twenty to fifty dollars depending on condition.

Another current production by Disney that produced some colorful artwork is the movie Finding Nemo. Nemo posters are harder to find, maybe due to some type of promotional issues from Pixar, but this is not certain. The only Nemo poster that seems to be plentiful involves a large grinning shark staring at Nemo. This poster advertises the movie as being from Pixar, the computer animation division related to Disney, and also mentions previous success story Monsters Inc. Affordable Nemo prints can be purchased, but to find one of these authentic movie posters will cost a collector at least seventy dollars in mediocre condition.

Lately there has been a flurry of production involving the Disney princesses, even though there has not been a new movie created featuring any of them. Disney princess posters have thus enjoyed a surge in popularity, making them sought out by collectors. Some of the newer princesses such as Jasmine from Aladdin might be easy to find, but an original poster for Cinderella from the 1950s is going to be manifold in price and hard to find. An original Cinderella poster wil be at least a couple hundred dollars. Of all the Disney princesses, Tinkerbell posters seem to be the most difficult to find because unlike the others, she was a supporting cast member instead of the star. The fact that she was not the main character of a film coupled with the decades that have passed, have made Tinkerbell posters from the original movie release a rarity. Most of the Disney princesses posters are of mediocre value and not too difficult to find.

Disney made more than just cartoon posters. Posters for their other features, such as The Parent Trap are just as collectible and maybe more scarce than their cartoon counterparts. Other Walt Disney posters such as Disney World posters can be just as valuable. Collectors of vintage Disney posters often seek out more than just the cartoon memorabilia that comes to mind, and may expand their collection to begin including 3-D items also. The internet, with stores like ebay and independent seller sites like musicman.com, can be a quick and easy way to find most Disney posters of any type.
